LIons; Buck Peirce

-- "Costly victory" in Vancouver 24 Hours on October 27, 2008

LIons instead of Lions is a simple enough mistake to make, and so is Peirce instead of Pierce. But since the latter mistake is repeated, does the writer believe that s/he has the name correctly spelled?

RESPONSABILITY

-- Sign in parking lot of Best Western Abercorn Inn in Richmond, BC, Canada on October 18, 2008

Do you, hotel owner(s), accept responsibility for the sign's misspelling? Would it have killed you to put a period after CONTENTS and SPACE? If it was all one sentence then sure, no punctuation is acceptable. But there are clearly two sentences here.

Numb3ers

-- "Prime time best bets" in Vancouver 24 Hours on October 24, 2008

Once again, a fortnight later, 24 Hours has Numb3rs' title correct in the column, yet incorrect in the photo caption.

repecheage

-- "SHORT-TRACK SCHEDULE" in Vancouver 24 Hours on October 24, 2008

If you write both repecheage and the correctly spelt repechage in the same short column, someone is bound to notice.

Lose rock closes road

-- "Lose rock closes road" in The Province on October 26, 2008

The headline confused me even after reading it three times. I then had to read the blurb to make sure it was in fact an error.

GHOSTS & GOBBLINS

-- Digital register at Purdy's Chocolate in Burnaby, B.C.'s Metrotown Mall on October 19, 2008

AAAAAaaaaaaah! A spooky misspelling!

Ladies and gentlemen, behold a rare reversal of the more common it's for its error.

VANOC headquaters

-- "New homes in village after 2010" in Vancouver 24 Hours on October 22, 2008

I should have a separate blog for just 24 Hours errors.

-- "If you can't trust the Russians, who can you trust?" in Vancouver 24 Hours on October 21, 2008

I think this writer's column runs once a week, and I know there is usually at least one error in each column. The writer often uses it's when it should be its.

This is equivalent to a punch in the face. Fer cryin' out loud, the correct spelling is to the immediate right of the quoted text. Come on.

strapping on the on the blades; Tooth Fairie

-- "Rock on ice" in Vancouver 24 Hours on October 15, 2008

With all the essays and term papers I've had to write, with minimum-word standards, why didn't I ever think I ever think to just repeat a few strings of words? Lest you think Tooth Fairie (seen in the photo caption) is correct in a creative movie minds kind of way, the correct Tooth Fairy was used in the unseen text. Look at Ashley Judd's IMDb page if in doubt.

Take out and his two dogs and you're left with a room for he was on the way. Incorrect, non? And coorinator could be the name of Duffman's brother.

Numb3ers

-- "Prime time tonight (On The Tube)" in Vancouver 24 Hours on October 10, 2008

See, what's clever about the show's title is that they use a number that kinda looks like the letter it is in place of. As an example of something that is anti-clever, the photo caption completely screws up the title's concept.

LE'TS GO CRAZY

Let's just say that for the apostrophe to be where it is, someone has gone crazy.

Jarkko Ruuttu

-- "2008-09 NHL Season Preview" in Vancouver 24 Hours on October 8, 2008

He was a favorite of mine when he was a Canuck, especially when he was performing his highly successful shootout move: right-leg kick then a backhand to the roof. Saw it a couple of times last year during televised Penguins games; hope to see it a few times this year during televised Sens games. His last name is Ruutu.

Nat Bailey Stadium 601 Ontario Street

A couple of weeks ago, Biscotti and I each received a voter information card in the mail. As the advance voting days approached, we decided to get our votes in then, for various reasons. Our advance voting location was identified correctly as Nat Bailey Stadium. However, 601 Ontario Street immediately jumped out at me. Ontario Street runs northbound until just past 1st Ave, near Science World. At Ontario Street's northern-most point, where its addresses would be the lowest, an address would be in the area of 1500. Therefore, 601 Ontario Street is not possible.

Having been to Nat Bailey Stadium a few times in my life (go C's!), I know that it is near 30th Ave. But I can imagine people who have never been - or possibly heard of - Nat Bailey Stadium, attempting to find it using the incorrect address, failing to find it, and therefore not voting. A week or so after the original was sent, new voter information cards were sent. In the top right corner was yellow-highlighted text: Revised Information. Also yellow-highlighted was the new correct address for Nat Bailey Stadium: 4601 Ontario Street.

Looking past how dumb it was to have made the error in the first place - I mean, c'mon, it's info from government pertaining to how to vote in a federal election - consider the effort made to rectify the error, including the cost of mailing out all those new cards and having someone (several people?) highlight the texts on all those new cards. Some attention to detail the first time around would have prevented a lot of unnecessary costs.

childhood obesity and it's long- term effects

More its/it's trouble. And why a space after the hyphen? There is no good answer.

halfway hosue; sexually assault two women; is a 37 years old

-- "Police warning (need to know)" in Vancouver 24 Hours on October 6, 2008

A halfway hosue? I say a half-assed effort. He sexually assaulted two women. He's either a 37-year-old man or 37 years old, never the combined a 37 years old.

relunctantly

-- "Oh dread, the set-up" in Vancouver 24 Hours on October 3, 2008

One would think 24 Hours, being a newspaper, would have a spell checker. Based on several months of evidence, I believe they don't have one and that they should strongly consider investing in one, either computer or intern. It wouldn't catch all their spelling errors but it would catch some, including this one: relunctantly should be reluctantly.

Maybe the writer has a friend or relative with the name Rachel MacAdams, but most readers are probably more familiar with actress Rachel McAdams.

Best Interior Desination; Propsera Place; VISITOR'S COMMENTS; courtesty; travller; ITS HAPPENING; ITS HAPPENING

In the 2008 edition of The Georgia Straight's Best of Vancouver, Thursday September 18 2008, Tourism Kelowna took out a full page ad to trump their readers' choice wins. The top of the ad: Then a list of events to draw you to this great desination:

I've never been to the facility, and it's been many years since I've been to Kelowna, but even I know that it's Prospera Place and not Propsera Place - and three times at that! I wonder how Prospera Credit Union feels about that multi-typo..

Just now, I figured I'd check out the Tourism Kelowna website. I didn't get past the top half of the first page without detecting an error:

Can you spot it? I'll give you a second or two. Time's up. By visitor's comments, has Kelowna only ever seen one visitor? If they've seen more than one, then it should read visitors' comments. Clicking that link takes us to this:

Aaaaaah. I have discovered an endless chain of errors and I can't get free. In the above, courtesy has an extra letter and travller is missing a letter.

Finally, on a hunch I checked out the Prospera Place website, and at the top of their homepage is this:

It should be it's, both times.

VERY COMPETIVE

-- Sign outside Wendy's on SE corner of Ontario Street and SE Marine Drive, Saturday September 20 2008

I'll tell you what's competitive: the letters in the word competitive on this sign. The letters I and T knew that only one of each of them could make it to the show, and what you see is the result of a tickle match to the death. The only other visibly-different result would have been COMPEITVE. Sadly, the other side of the sign was exactly the same. More sadly, both sides remain unchanged to this day.
